Alpharetta Campus of DeVry University Adds New Options to Information Systems Degree Programs

In response to current and forecasted employment conditions for the information technology (IT) industry in the United States, DeVry University, one of North America’s leading career-oriented institutions for business, technology and management education, has revised its bachelor’s degree program in computer information systems (CIS) to include seven new specialized academic options. In addition to the required foundation courses in the program, the new options will enable students to develop specialized skills that align with the current state of the IT industry.

A number of factors, including the rise in offshore outsourcing of certain IT jobs and the increasing occurrences of “cyber crime,” have changed the face of the IT industry, and as a result, changed the essential skills students need to excel professionally.

The new options within the computer information systems degree program include computer forensics, database management, information systems security, systems analysis and integration, Web development and administration, and business/management. A flex-option track allows students to select courses from other DeVry University bachelor’s degree programs to complete their degree requirements.

“We are responding to the changing IT industry in order to ensure DeVry University graduates are prepared to excel in emerging industry areas,” said E.R. Wachter, Ph.D., dean of school of technology at DeVry University/Georgia. “Professionals who know how to protect companies and consumers from cyber crime will be in great demand in our increasingly networked world, and the new specialized options give our students the edge in this evolving industry.”

The information systems security option focuses on protecting computer systems and data from outside interference. According to a report released last year by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) on the employment outlook for the IT job market, concerns over terrorism, critical infrastructure protection and homeland security, as well as the growing problem of identity theft, make information security the single greatest area of IT job growth over the next three to five years.

Computer forensics, a second option offered through DeVry University’s updated degree program, is another growing area of specialization within the IT industry. Computer forensic experts utilize computer applications to collect legal evidence for issues such as theft of trade secrets and theft or destruction of intellectual property.

“As organizations continue to become more reliant on computers for their operations, new kinds of theft and fraud are being committed, and there is increasing need for IT specialists who can recover deleted, encrypted or damaged files,” said Wachter. “Computer forensics experts are commonly called upon by attorneys, insurance companies, corporations and law enforcement officials to provide their critical expertise.”

“DeVry University has always relied on the input of employers and the trends shaping the IT workforce when we design our degree programs. We are confident that these new options will provide our students with an education that is current and prepares them for the IT environment they will encounter when they graduate,” said Wachter.

This program launches in July at DeVry's Alpharetta and Decatur Campuses. For more information call 770.664.9520 (Alpharetta) or 404.292.2645 (Decatur).

As one of the largest degree-granting higher education systems in North America, DeVry University provides high-quality, career-oriented associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in technology, business and management. Approximately 53,000 students are enrolled at its 75 locations that are in 21 states and Canada, as well as through DeVry University Online.
