How to get started
If you are wondering if a vision problem is keeping you from succeeding, then the best place to start is with our vision therapy screening, this is a fast, efficient way for us discover if vision is causing you to struggle or is keeping you from succeeding at the level you wish to reach .The screening takes approximately 30 minutes. If you are a child your parents must be present during the screening and for all other evaluations. If you fail the vision therapy screening, you will referred for a comprehensive eye health examination and / or a sensorimotor (vision therapy) evaluation. If Dr. Linert finds during the sensorimotor evaluation that you need or ' can benefit from vision therapy, then your customized program will be created at that time. The frequency and duration of therapy will vary for each person.

"I started out in the beginning with a challenge, proving to myself with self determination I would be successful in my vision therapy program. From blurring vision when reading, lack of comprehension, and major headaches, to a real confident feeling of pleasure to see detail again and no headaches "for a three day minimum" All gone! A major relief! I feel confident I will be able to use my eyes to their fullest potential without correcting my vision. The hard work and effort put into my vision therapy program certainly payed off for me. I have been very successful and pleased, and recommended everyone who is having an eye problem to check their eyes and if they do need vision therapy they too will be able to be a success!"

THE SOLUTION There is hope and help for your child's binocular vision problem through vision therapy. Vision therapy is the treatment that can eliminate these problems and STOP THE STRUGGLE for your child. Highly trained vision therapists use specialized instruments to teach your child how to coordinate his eyes correctly. This eliminates blurred and double vision allowing your child to sit and read comfortably or to be the best he can be in sports.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE A BINOCULAR VISION PROBLEM?
Review the symptoms checklist.  If your child exhibits any of these symptoms he may have a binocular vision problem. If you think your child may have a vision problem now is the time to STOP THE STRUGGLE.

Have your child's binocular vision evaluated by a Behavioral Optometrist (a doctor who specializes in treating binocular vision problems). Left untreated these problems only get worse!

Call Dr. Linert with any questions you may have and to set up a screening appointment. The screening will tell us whether or not a binocular vision problem is causing your child to struggle in school.

More About Binocular Vision
Many parents, teachers and doctors have been deceived into believing that if a child has "20/20" visual acuity then there is not a problem with the child's eyes. This is a very dangerous assumption. General eye examinations and school screenings only test visual acuity: Having good visual acuity means that you can look at a letter on a chart 20 feet away for as long as it takes to identify the letter. It does not mean that the letters are always clear when you are actively using your eyes. To have good Binocular Vision ( Bino-"two", Ocular-"eye") the two eyes must coordinate together precisely. If this does not happen the reult is blurred and/or double vision. Most of the time binocular vision problems arc not- picked up during a general eye examination. Special tests are performed during a binocular vision examination to detect these hidden vision problems.

HOW DO BINOCULAR VISION PROBLEMS AFFECT YOUR CHILD?
A binocular vision problem affects almost all areas of a child's life. It affects academic performance (especially reading and comprehension), attention, athletic ability, body balance, self-esteem and many other areas. Children do not "grow out of these problems. The problem only gets worse with time. As adults they may experience computer stress syndrome, (which manifests as tired, sore eyes and headaches at the computer) and/or they may be prone to more accidents when driving a car. Another side effect of poor binocular vision skills is becoming very nearsighted. Many adults who had uncorrected binocular vision problems as children wear thick glasses now. This may have been avoided altogether if their binocular vision problems were corrected at an early age.

ACADEMICS

  • READING:
All subjects that involve reading are affected by a binocular vision problem
    • difficulty learning alphabet or learning to read
    • slow reader
    • difficulty remembering what was read
    • must reread to get the meaning out of the text
    • difficulty with attention, especially when reading.
    • difficulty on standardized tests
  • SPELLING:
    • difficulty learning alphabet
    • persistent difficulty learning to spell
    • unable to rmember same word in next sentance when reading
  • MATH:
    • difficulty aligning columns in long division
    • more difficulty with "story" problems than with pure calculations
  • HANDWRITING:
    • poorly spaced words
    • all squished together or too far apart

ATTENTION
Eighty percent (80%) of what you perceive is taken in through your eyes. A child with a binocular vision problem will have difficulty concentrating on anything, especially a task like reading. A significant amount of concentration is needed to sit and read a book for a long period of time. These children may start out reading fine, but they quickly tire. Soon their mind starts to wander and their attention is everywhere but on the book. Binocular vision problems cause difficulties with concentration and attention in many areas of life. Many children who have been diagnosed with an attention problem such as Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADD, ADHD) actually have a vision problem. There are numerous reports of children who were taking Ritalin (an attention medication) and other similar drugs that were able to stop taking the medication once their binocular vision problem was treated.

SPORTS
Have you ever wondered what it is that gives some athletes that "little edge" that allows them to achieve above all the others? It may be their vision. A child who has a binocular vision problem will have difficulty excelling in sports or may never reach his true potential. For example, in baseball, a child may consistently swing the bat too early or too late. He will have difficulty catching the ball because his depth perception will be "off".

BALANCE
Binocular vision problems affect body balance.

  • clumsiness: spills glass of milk at the dinner table
  • difficulty learning to ride a bike
  • gets car sick
  • poor body coordination

SELF-ESTEEM
Hundreds of intelligent children and adults go through life feeling stupid because of an undetected vision problem. When a bright child is struggling in school and is performing below the level that he knows he is capable of he gets frustrated and, finally, gives up. Sometimes these children are given labels like learning disabled or attention deficit. They carry this label all through their school years and into college. As adults in the workplace they secretly feel stupid and may do things to compensate or to hide their inadequacies. All this could have been avoided if only this problem was found and treated.
